We had tried the My Breast Friend nursing pillow in the past, which we liked design wise, but were never comfortable with the fact that it is made with polyurethane foam, which seems like it is also glued together with who knows what to make a custom shape. Polyurethane foam is made from petroleum and contains surfactants, emulsifiers, chemical catalysts and more. It has been noted on MSDS data sheets to cause headache, dizziness, breathlessness, and much more. Read a bit more here or in many other places online. With baby's head next to this material, it never felt right.
The Organic Caboose nursing pillow is soft organic cotton, nothing else. It is malleable, but not too soft. The shape contours the body, so the sides hug around the waist. It is big enough to support as the baby grows. When baby is no longer nursing, it can be used as a regular pillow, it is really comfortable! It is great when something for baby can be used throughout the years for another purpose. Keeps waste and new production down, therefore more eco conscious.
The cover is machine washable and comes in natural or some cute print options. The natural cover is nice and thick, very soft inside and out, and simple. If you want a print option, there are many to choose from. They come in different types of fabric as well, although all organic cotton. Some of the print covers might be on the thinner side and not as stretchy as the natural, for example the midnight blue. This may or may not be important to you, but it is worth pointing out.
The fact that all the materials are made in the US is a bonus. It is also hand-stuffed! Organic Caboose offers many other products as well, cloth diapering, nursing pads, some bedding options, all made in the US. We are very happy with this nursing pillow and feel great using with our baby. I haven't tried it with a smaller newborn, but I imagine it would work just fine. You could prop up on either side with more pillows if necessary. It is important to always watch when baby is on the pillow and never let baby use the pillow for sleeping or in the crib. It is only to be used for active nursing.
